Christus Victor
ROME
The beginnings of a confessional Lutheran congregation in Rome date back to 2020, when a handful of confessional Lutherans, thanks also to the help of some missionaries from the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, began meeting privately to celebrate Mass, listen to Scripture, and spend time together. These meetings were occasional at first, but over time they began to become more regular.
The small group moved to its current location—the church on Via del Teatro Valle—at the end of 2023, thanks in part to a friendly relationship with the Baptist community that owns the building. In January 2024, during the first of a series of international theological symposia (titled "Rome and Justification"), the official inauguration was celebrated, with the adoption of the name Christus Victor ("Christ Triumphant").
O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is death. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
Indeed, it is to the victory of Jesus Christ that the life and ministry not only of this parish, but of the entire universal Church, are consecrated. Each week, in Word and Sacrament, we celebrate the triumph of the Son of God, remembering that, beyond the blanket of bad news, the good news remains and remains forever: "Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered!" (Revelation 5:5).
The logo
The original design of the Christus Victor logo was created by Fr. Joshua Salas in 2022. The triumphant Lamb appears in the center: at his feet, the two keys represent his authority to free humanity from the forces of death and sin. Proclaiming Christ's victory and divinity, the Latin words from Revelation 17:14 appear on the crown: “Et Agnus vincet illos, quoniam Dominus dominorum est et Rex regum” – “The Lamb will conquer them (the devil, death, and sin), for he is Lord of lords and King of kings.”
